Small News From The Theme Park Industry

Good to see! That turn was a particularly rough point on both sides... do we know how much, if any, more is being done?

Now all they need to do is replace the trains with some GCI Millennium Flyers like Tomahawk has, and we'll be golden!

100% let’s hope those Kumbak trains are history they are awful.
 
I hope SFM also gets a second next-gen train for their SLC. Upgrading only one of the trains to vest restraints is peak old-school Six Flags.

Imaging waiting 2 hours for an SLC and having a 50/50 chance of getting the old train 🥲
 
Another Six Flags coaster is being repainted, it would seem, with Titan at Six Flags Over Texas going to blue track and white supports:

It’s certainly a change for this coaster, but it could look quite nice when done, I think! It’s also nice to see the new Six Flags doing lots of painting at the parks; it at least shows a commitment to maintenance and visuals, if nothing else.

Looks really nice in Blue and White, much nicer than salmon and teal, imo.
 
After being closed since September 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tivoli World in Benalmadena, Spain, is set to reopen in the next few years. The local government will sign an agreement with Tremon Real Estate Group to renovate and reopen the park as an amusement and commercial complex. The planned €200 million investment will expand the leisure area with a shopping center and hotels. The park was Costa del Sol’s top amusement park and concert venue. It's also home to a Zyklon Galaxi, a Mack powered coaster, and a kiddie oval. Source
 
Tony Clark announced in his blog that the free lockers for smaller items available at Steel Vengeance will also be available at Top Thrill 2 and Siren's Curse. Metal detectors at all three coasters will prevent riders from bringing personal items like wallets, keys, and cell phones on the rides. Last year Top Thrill 2 riders with smaller items had to pay for larger lockers for their phones, etc.
Riders with items like purses and backpacks will still be required to rent a locker to ride these coasters.

Yeah, I think so, as long as it's based on the books - similar to how people can use Thor as long as they don't copy the Marvel version. So many great characters are up for grabs by anyone, as far as I know - Sherlock Holmes, Wind in the Willows, all classic literature really. I know Popeye and Tintin became public domain recently as well.

I think that's only for the original "Steamboat Willie" Mickey. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

I did some research and you're not mistaken.

Another big one is Winnie the Pooh.

But the trouble with Winnie and Mickey, is that Disney still have protection over everything people nowadays would recognise as those characters. Because their images, as we'd recognise them today, are derivative works. coming from later books / cartoons / movies, so their current likenesses are still protected. Most people wouldn't recognise Steamboat Willie as Mickey Mouse, and Winnie's red top was introduced much later, so that is still protected, isn't WInnie just another bear without his red top?

Peter Pan is a rabbit hole worth going down. It should technically be in the public domain by now, and is in many places. But in the UK, presumably because the rights are held by, and directly support Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, the government made special provisions a long time ago allowing them to still receive royalties to this day. https://www.gosh.org/about-us/peter-pan/copyright/

I don't understand it all fully, aside from a bit of a rabbit hole today. But ultimately, I think it will only work for things like Wizard of Oz. Where any illustrator / artist can draw up brand new character images, and them be instantly recognisable, such as the ones above. Draw any young girl, witch, lion, scarecrow and tin man in the same image, and it's instantly recognisable as Wizard of Oz. In short, very very smart move Gulliver's.
