New B&M Surf Coaster For Happy Valley Shanghai.

Stand up for stand-ups!

Given the disappearing act the first gen Togo/ Intamin/B&M stand-ups are doing (only 7 of the 20 built still operate as stand-ups), I was very curious to see if we'd ever see another surf coaster come to fruition to signal a true rekindling of the genre.

Quite an interesting development.

I'm curious about parks like this - if the "20 year rule" is a) real/enforced, and b) still around, by the end of the decade this park will lose almost it's entire ride line-up. They're going to need a pretty serious strategy to keep them relevant in 2030. Maybe this is the start?

This is what I was able to dig up, apparently it was mentioned offhand in a Shanghai theme park round table / press conference;
According to Hu Wei, general manager of Shanghai Happy Valley, the project plans to invest 2.6 billion yuan to complete the renovation of Shanghai Happy Valley within 8 years, including the introduction of new rides and the creation of new immersive interpretation activities.

"For example, we plan to introduce Asia's first standing roller coaster in the fifth phase of the project." Hu Wei revealed that the more important point is that as a theme park of a local Chinese brand, Shanghai Happy Valley will focus on introducing national trend IP and highlighting Chinese elements. "I hope to compete with many international brand theme parks on the international 'big stage' in Shanghai, showing the unique charm of Chinese theme parks."

B&M was never explicitly confirmed, my gut says Surf Coaster since really that’s the only standup on the market, but it’d be incredibly funny if Jinma was working on something behind closed doors. They’ve been moving in lately on contracts that might typically have gone to Vekoma or Intamin, it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

As @ECG pointed out the eight-year, phase five window makes me think that they’re mulling a bunch of longer-term replacements rather than a big park expansion for 2026/27. Perhaps the Dive Machine, maybe?

I doubt this one will be a Jinma, but if it's a B&M going into a OCT park, it won't be long before Jinma somehow get incredibly close access to it and suddenly start selling their own version.
